Issue Position: Consumer Protection

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

The Washington State Insurance Commissioner, an independently-elected position, was established by a vote of the people in 1907.

I believe that my primary duty as Insurance Commissioner is to protect consumers. Insurance is a big business - bringing in over $30 billion annually to the state. My staff help individual consumers whose claims have been unfairly delayed or denied. In fact, since I was first elected insurance commissioner in 2001, my office has helped consumers recover an average of $10 million every year from insurance companies.
